Alcohol

Last year (2007) has seen the publication of the government “Safe, Sensible, Social. The next steps in the National Alcohol Strategy.” which sets out priorities in achieving the long term aims of reducing alcohol-related ill health and crime.

This document highlights the need to tackle the problems of:

  • 18-24 year old binge drinkers
  • Young people (under 18) who drink alcohol
  • Adult drinkers who do not realise that drinking may be harming their physical and mental health

It set out key actions:

  • Sharpened criminal justice for drunken behaviour
  • A review of NHS spending in Alcohol
  • More help for people who want to drink less
  • Toughened enforcement of underage sales
  • Trusted guidance for parents and young people
  • Continued investment in communications campaigns to promote a new ‘sensible drinking’ culture
  • Public consultation on alcohol pricing
  • Compulsory local alcohol strategies

The alcohol strategy for Sandwell is currently being refreshed; it will include local objectives which will be achieved through partnership working and will be available shortly.
